11 month old wake windows are 3 to 6 hours. Most babies still split the day with two naps, filling the stretches between with wobbly steps, meals and milk feeds and a lot of exploring.
The insight that surprises parents at this age: bedtime is decided in the afternoon. The last window before bed is the longest of the day, and it starts the moment the afternoon nap ends, so an evening that falls apart usually began with a nap that ended too late or too early, not with the bedtime routine itself. If bedtime has become a struggle, check the afternoon nap's end time before you touch anything else.

With a 7:00 am wake and two naps of about an hour, the calculator builds the day below. The bottom row is the one to watch: the longest window, ending in bed.
| Time | What | Awake before it |
|---|---|---|
| 7:00 am | Wake up | Start of day |
| 10:05 am | Nap 1 (about 60 min) | 3 hr 5 min awake |
| 2:25 pm | Nap 2 (about 60 min) | 3 hr 20 min awake |
| 7:00 pm | Bedtime | 3 hr 35 min awake |

Count from your baby's real wake, not 7:00 am. This age band is broad, so if the result lands later than suits your family, enter the nap lengths you actually see and the timeline will move. The range follows Cleveland Clinic's wake windows by age.
How many naps does an 11 month old need?
An 11 month old usually still needs 2 naps, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. Keep both while they still help your baby enjoy the day and arrive at the evening in good spirits.
A settled morning nap tends to organize everything after it, and the afternoon nap shapes bedtime. Together with the night they make up part of the 12 to 16 hours in 24 recommended in the AASM consensus on pediatric sleep. Talk of one nap belongs to the months after the first birthday, and only when the pattern itself starts to change.
What does a good awake stretch look like at 11 months?
At 11 months a good stretch often includes first steps, usually with both hands held and a lot of falling down on the way.

Give walking practice the early, energetic part of each window. Meals, a milk feed, a diaper change and a few minutes of reading on your lap fill out the rest. In the last window of the day, keep the evening simple: lay out pajamas and feeding things before the afternoon gets busy, so you are not hunting for them with a tired baby on your hip.
11 month old sleepy cues: early and late
Early cues at 11 months show up between bursts of activity: an eye rub, a stare, a yawn while reaching for the next thing. Late cues are frustration with a toy they love, clinging and tears.

| Early cue | What to do |
|---|---|
| Rubbing an eye between steps | Stop the walking game and sit together |
| Staring at nothing for a moment | Switch to a quiet book or a cuddle |
| Getting frustrated with a favorite toy | Put the toy away and start the routine |
| Reaching to be picked up | Hold them and move toward the dim room |
How to use 11 month old wake windows
- Start from the real wake
Note when your baby woke this morning. Every feed, change and cuddle after that is part of the window.
- Watch for the quiet moment inside 3 to 6 hours
Start watching from around the 3 hour mark and act on the first eye rub or stare. The top of the range is a ceiling, not a plan.
- Count the next window from the nap that actually happened
Each window starts when the nap before it ended. The afternoon nap's real end time is the start of the countdown to bed.
- Wind down before fussing builds
Begin the routine at the first quiet cue. Once a tired 11 month old is crying, the last stretch gets harder.

What if the day goes off plan?
Most off days at 11 months show up at bedtime, even when they started at lunch. Plan the next window from what actually happened.
| Situation | What to try for the next window |
|---|---|
| Short afternoon nap under 30 min | Start the bedtime routine earlier, toward the 3 hour end |
| Long afternoon nap | Count from the late wake and expect a later bedtime |
| Early morning wake | Start the first window from that wake and watch for cues sooner |
| Skipped nap | Keep a quiet rest on offer and bring bedtime earlier |
| Daycare day | Ask for real nap start and end times, then count from the last one |
| Sick or teething day | Let your baby rest when needed and comfort first |
On daycare days, "a good day" does not tell you when the last window started. Ask for the actual nap times and use the final wake to plan the evening, with time to feed and reconnect after pickup.
A skipped nap does not mean your baby is done with it. Offer both naps again the next day and watch whether the change repeats over several days.
A wind-down that works at 11 months
At 11 months the wind-down is mostly about stopping: getting off two feet, away from the toys and into a quiet room.

- Give a short heads-up, then end the walking game.
- Dim the room, change the diaper and offer milk if it is due.
- Read the same short book and say your usual nap words.
- Lay your baby down drowsy and leave with a calm goodbye.
If a visit or a new caregiver has unsettled the day, add a few extra minutes of closeness at the start. Share the steps with anyone who helps, so the routine is the same whoever does it.
Common 11 month old wake window mistakes
- Blaming the bedtime routine for a late-nap problem. Check when the afternoon nap ended first.
- Planning to the top of the range. Watch for cues from about 3 hours in.
- Preparing for one nap because the birthday is close. Keep both naps while they still work.
- Hearing "she napped fine" at pickup. Ask for real start and end times.
- Leaving bedtime prep until the last window. Set out pajamas and feeding things earlier in the afternoon.
Why a chart stops working (and what to do instead)
3 to 6 hours is a wide target for a baby who walks one week and refuses a nap the next. Short naps move the whole afternoon, and at 3am you need an answer, not a calculation.
The free calculator above rebuilds the timeline from today's real wake and nap lengths. A nap plan then adapts it as your baby keeps changing.
What changes next: 11 months to 12 months
At 12 months the wake window range stays at 3 to 6 hours, and many children still take two naps on their first birthday. The move to one nap comes later, once the second nap keeps getting harder to fit for days on end.

The 10 month old wake windows guide covers the start of this wider range, and 9 month old wake windows is useful if you want to separate a settling problem from a real schedule change. For the birthday month and the slow road toward one nap, read 12 month old wake windows. The wake window chart shows every age, and the printable wake window chart is handy for daycare.
How do I keep 11 month old naps safe?
Every nap at 11 months goes on the back, alone, in an empty crib with a firm flat mattress, even though your baby can now stand up in it.

The American Academy of Pediatrics guide to safe sleep keeps it to four rules:
- Lay your baby on their back for every sleep.
- Keep the sleep space bare: no pillows, blankets, bumpers or toys.
- Use a crib or bassinet with a firm, flat mattress and a fitted sheet.
- Share a room, not a bed or sofa.
For fever, pauses in breathing, blue or gray lips, difficulty waking, or unusual sleepiness with poor feeding, call your pediatrician, or emergency services if it feels urgent.
A guide, not medical advice.
11 month old wake windows are 3 to 6 hours, usually across two naps. When bedtime gets hard, look at when the afternoon nap ended before changing the routine. Use the calculator above to plan today, or get a nap plan that adjusts as your baby heads toward the first birthday.
Frequently asked questions
Cleveland Clinic lists 3 to 6 hours for this age. Start with the timing that has been comfortable for your baby and watch the end of each stretch for early cues.
No. Keep the morning and afternoon naps that are working and watch for a lasting change in how they fit before you plan anything.
A birthday does not decide nap readiness. Keep both naps while they help your child through the day, and look for a change that lasts, not one hard week.
Often the afternoon nap ended later or earlier than usual, which changes the long last window. Check that end time, prepare the room early and keep the routine familiar while you adjust.
Swap actual nap start and end times rather than "good day" or "bad day." Use the final wake time to plan the evening, with room to feed and reconnect after pickup.
Look for eye rubbing, staring, yawning or frustration between bursts of walking and play. Start the wind-down at the first quiet cue rather than waiting for tears.
