5 month old wake windows are 2 to 4 hours. The range has jumped from the 3 and 4 month band, and the day now usually fits into three naps with feeds, play and a short outing in between.
Here is what surprises parents: the last window before bed is the longest of the day, and it is the third nap that makes it work. In the sample, the windows grow from 2 hr in the morning to 2 hr 30 min before bedtime. When the late nap gets skipped, that final stretch does not get easier because your baby is "more tired"; it gets longer than your baby can handle, so the fix is an earlier bedtime, not a longer push.

Get my nap planSample 5 month old schedule (7:00 am wake-up)
From a 7:00 am wake, the calculator plans three naps of about an hour and a 7:00 pm bedtime. Notice that every window is longer than the one before it.
| Time | What | Awake before it |
|---|---|---|
| 7:00 am | Wake up | Start of the day |
| 9:00 am | Nap 1 (about 60 min) | 2 hr |
| 12:10 pm | Nap 2 (about 60 min) | 2 hr 10 min |
| 3:30 pm | Nap 3 (about 60 min) | 2 hr 20 min |
| 7:00 pm | Bedtime | 2 hr 30 min |

Every time in that table depends on the one above it. If the morning starts later or a nap runs short, the rest of the day slides, so use the real wake as your starting point and let the times follow.
How many naps does a 5 month old need?
A 5 month old usually needs 3 naps a day: a morning nap, a midday nap and a late afternoon nap. That is the calculator's starting point for this age.
The first two naps are the backbone. They tend to be the easier ones to settle, and on a good day they carry most of the daytime sleep. The third nap is different. It is often shorter, sometimes harder to start, and on some days it barely happens. Its job is not to be a big sleep; it is there so the last window before bed stays within what your baby can manage.
Having just come from four naps, some 5 month olds still have days that look like the old pattern, especially after short naps. An extra short rest on those days is fine. Let the naps your baby actually took decide the shape of today.
What does a good awake stretch look like at 5 months?
A good 5 month old awake stretch has room for a full feed, real play on the floor and a calm last part before the nap.

With two hours or more per window, there is time for more than one kind of play. Sitting with support while holding a toy, rolling on a blanket, tummy time with something to grab, a walk outside to look at trees and traffic: mix a busy bit with a calm bit. Many 5 month olds love dropping and grabbing the same toy over and over; let them.
Put the outing or the visit early in a window, not at the end. A busy trip to the shops that ends right at nap time makes it harder to spot the early cues, and harder for your baby to let go of all that excitement.
5 month old sleepy cues: early and late
At 5 months, early sleepy cues show up as drifting attention: the toy goes still, the gaze wanders, a yawn or an eye rub. Late cues are frustration with play, fussing and crying.

A 5 month old can be tired and still interested in you. If they are smiling but rubbing their eyes, believe the eye rub.
| Early cue | What to do |
|---|---|
| Toy goes still in their hands | Take the toy away gently and slow down |
| Gaze drifting past you | Move somewhere quieter and dimmer |
| Rubbing eyes while still smiling | Check feeding and comfort, then start the routine |
| Getting frustrated with an easy toy | Stop play and go straight to wind-down |
How to use 5 month old wake windows
- Start from the real wake
Take the minute your baby actually woke as the start. Feeds, changes and cuddles all sit inside the window.
- Watch for the quiet moment inside 2 to 4 hours
Look near the 2 hour mark in the morning and allow a little more each window after that. Your baby's cue matters more than the clock.
- Count the next window from the nap that actually happened
If the midday nap was short, plan the late nap earlier. If it was long, the late nap moves later and may get shorter.
- Wind down before fussing builds
Start your routine at the first early cue, especially before the long last window ends at bedtime.

What if the day goes off plan?
When a 5 month old day goes off plan, it is usually the third nap or the bedtime that needs adjusting. Use the row that fits.
| Situation | What to try for the next window |
|---|---|
| Short nap under 30 min | Offer the next nap near the 2 hour end of the range |
| Long nap | Count from the late wake; the third nap may shrink or slide later |
| Early morning wake | Keep the first window near 2 hours and move the whole day earlier |
| Late nap refused | Offer quiet rest, then plan an earlier bedtime |
| Born 3+ weeks early | Use adjusted age; the 4 month range may fit better for now |
| Sick or teething day | Shorter windows, extra comfort, and ask your pediatrician if worried |
The refused late nap is the most common puzzle at this age. One refusal does not mean your baby is ready for two naps. Look at the whole day: if the earlier naps were short and your baby is fading by evening, keep offering that third rest. If the first two naps were long and the late nap keeps landing close to bedtime, that is when the spacing of the day is starting to change.
A wind-down that works at 5 months
A 5 month old wind-down works when it signals sleep clearly and stays the same whether the nap is at 9:00 am or 3:30 pm.

Your baby is noticing more of the world, so the wind-down is partly about switching it off. The bedtime version can be a little longer than the nap version, with the same core steps.
- Lights down and curtains closed.
- Diaper change and sleep sack.
- A short book or song in the same chair.
- A cuddle until your baby is drowsy, then down on their back in the crib.
Common 5 month old wake window mistakes
- Using the top of the range as the goal. Four hours is the edge of the band, not today's target.
- Dropping the third nap after a few refusals. Keep offering it while earlier naps are still short.
- Stretching the last window to get a later bedtime. An earlier bedtime protects the evening after a short day.
- Planning outings at the end of a window. Put the busy part first and the quiet part last.
- Treating each window the same length. The morning is the shortest and the last stretch is the longest.
Why a chart stops working (and what to do instead)
Two to four hours is a big range, and a chart cannot tell you whether today is a 2 hour day or a longer one. Your baby changes from week to week, a short midday nap shifts the whole afternoon, and at 3am the last thing you want is a sum about tomorrow's nap times.
The free calculator above recalculates from your baby's real wake time, so the late nap and bedtime move when the day does. A nap plan goes one step further and adapts as your baby's naps settle into a new pattern.
What changes next: 5 month old to 6 month old
From 5 to 6 months, the numbers stay the same: 2 to 4 hours, three naps, 12 to 16 hours of total sleep. What changes is how settled the morning and afternoon naps become.

If the jump from four naps still feels recent, 4 month old wake windows cover the shorter 1 hr 15 min to 2 hr 30 min range and the four nap day. Moving on, 6 month old wake windows keep the same three naps with clearer morning and afternoon anchors. The bigger change after that is the 3 to 2 nap transition at 7 months, which is about that late nap you are already watching.
For the full picture, the wake window chart shows every band, and the printable wake window chart is handy for another caregiver.
How do I keep 5 month old naps safe?
Keep 5 month old naps safe with the same setup for every sleep: on the back, alone, in a crib or bassinet with a firm, flat mattress.

The AAP safe sleep advice applies to every nap, including the short late one taken on a busy day:
- Back to sleep, every time.
- Alone: no pillows, blankets, bumpers or toys in the sleep space.
- A crib or bassinet with a firm, flat mattress and a fitted sheet.
- Share a room, not a bed.
For fever, pauses in breathing, blue or gray lips, difficulty waking, or unusual sleepiness with poor feeding, call your pediatrician, or emergency services if it feels urgent.
A guide, not medical advice.
5 month old wake windows are 2 to 4 hours, with the shortest window in the morning and the longest one before bed. The habit that matters most is protecting that last window: keep offering the third nap, and move bedtime earlier when it does not happen. Put today's wake time into the calculator above, or let a nap plan reshape the day as the naps change.
Frequently asked questions
Cleveland Clinic gives 2 to 4 hours for the 5 to 7 month band. The morning usually suits the shorter end, with longer comfortable stretches later in the day.
Change the nap lengths in the calculator to match the naps your baby really takes. Then let the end of the last nap and your baby's tiredness decide when the evening wind-down starts.
Look for a pattern over several days, not one refusal. If earlier naps are still short and your baby struggles in the evening, keep offering the late rest.
Watch for the shift from absorbed play to drifting attention, eye rubbing or frustration with an easy toy. Pause the activity at that point and start a quiet transition.
A baby who still needs shorter awake stretches may find two naps a long day. Keep a third nap available and look at the whole day before removing it.
It is usually the longest of the day, about 2 hr 30 min in the sample. If naps were short and your baby is fading, start the bedtime routine sooner instead of using the far end of the range.
